Blue Mountains VGA 28th Annual Week of Golf
1st to 5th March
One hundred and two veteran
golfers from 42 golf clubs throughout NSW and Queensland
attended the week’s event, played at Blackheath, Leura and Wentworth Falls
golfing venues. The first two days were conducted at Blackheath Golf Club which
was in excellent condition after recent good rain, the weather on day one was
heavily overcast with light to heavy drizzling rain throughout the day. All 93
starters stuck it out and not one complaint regarding weather conditions was
forthcoming.
Despite overcoming many
obstacles in recent years, Tournament Director Paul Horton and his non-existant
organising committee failed to offer any Nearest the Pins, picked up by several
of our regular BM visitors and the TD was ducking for cover from some well
directed barbs.
Despite the conditions, which
continued every day of the week the golf scores improved every day and the
NSWVGA Trophy day at Leura on Thursday had probably the worst conditions all
week, varying from sand wedge visibility to steady heavy drizzle and 40pts from
the old fox Brian Turrell (Dubbo), and I mean that in the nicest possible way.
Zel Turrel took out the ladies NSWVGA
Trophy, both wins were fully deserved because if you really knew this magnificent
pair of ‘love birds’ and the conditions
under which they operate, you would agree, what fighter’s they really are.
We played an optional social
day at WentworthFalls on Wednesday, which included lunch
which was not as successful as I had hoped – I won’t use the midweek day
anymore! Well I couldn't anyway because there will be a new TD next year.
Five of the State Executive
Council attended the week and the usual excellent presentation dinner was
presented by my mate Kerry for the last time as he has ended his career as a
Chef and came out of retirement to this last dinner for me personally. This
would be among the top four dinners in the state, without question. The
Webmaster was the MC and kept things moving at a nice pace with a natural delay
preceding the dinner and only winners and runners-up presented with prizes at
the dinner.
NSWVGA Treasurer Alan Neems was called
upon to say a few words regarding the outgoing tournament director and he
called upon the nomadic ‘vet’ Michael Sykes (Manilla), because of his long time
relationship with this event, to respond on behalf of past and present ‘vets’.
I can assure you those words were appreciated very much and now it’s over to
the ‘new Blue Mountains Committee’ to take this long standing event to it’s 29th.
