Ballina Week of Golf

The inaugural week of golf was held during 19^th -23^rd July with 208 players from 67 clubs from as far as Rockhampton, Alice Springs, Victoria and all over NSW who participated in our week of golf events including the 36 Hole single stableford for the NSWVGA Shield. Sunday afternoon saw the registration of players in a quick and orderly fashion with players receiving their bag of goodies and daily tee times and name badges. The camaraderie of players followed with a complimentary drink and nibbles. Monday saw a field of 204 players enjoying and appreciating the course in fine and warm conditions. Tuesday with a field of 208 was a slightly cooler day with the first round of the main event, the 36 Hole NSWVGA Shield being contested. Lunch was a complimentary tasty sausage sizzle.

Wednesday being a rest day many players enjoyed a bus trip to Evans Head, New Italy (just south of Woodburn) where there was a demonstration of Glass Blowing and numerous products being for sale. Next stop was for lunch at the historic Brushgrove Hotel & again with complimentary drinks provided. The return trip included a view of MacLean from the lookout. Throughout the day a running commentary of the history of all areas travelled, was provided by our Committee member & Presentation Dinner MC, Paul Selman.

Later on the day, the weather changed with a southerly change arriving which made playing conditions slightly cooler. However Thursday the temperature fell to 18 but with the wind chill it felt like 15 degrees. Good golf was enjoyed by all which culminated in the final round of the NSWVGA event. The presentation dinner was attended by 200 with players, sponsors and Board representative with the NSWVGA President Dick Farrant providing appreciative comments and presenting the shield to the winner Alan Aitken (Mollymook Golf Club) and the women’s first place winner was Suzanne Armstrong (Georges River Golf Club). During the night there were several surprises, and with the thanks & appreciation one of the major sponsors, Elite Mobility Scooters, Ballina, a fold away scooter was donated as a Hole in one trophy, however as this was not claimed, it was then decided to be awarded to the closest NTP winner over the first three days this was ridden away by Robert Hamilton (Belmont Golf Club) with 58cms on the 8^th Hole. Bob was seen to be very pleased with his new toy. In addition and following, an electronic random draw for a mobility electric lounge chair this was won by Liz Nichols (Ballina).

The presentation involved over 45 trophies in addition to the NTP. Trophy’s& sponsored prizes in total exceeded  $7,000.Players expressed their appreciation of the management of the event including to Red Devils (Committee members Red jackets) who provided assistance when required. Players generally played their rounds in less than 4.5 hours and our thanks must go to the various volunteers who acted as bunker rakers, spotters and ranging duties.

On Friday, saw some rain in the morning session however the afternoon play saw some heavy rain set in with almost 75 mls falling, during the afternoon and evening.

Overall the event was very successful with all players enjoying their “Ballina by the Sea” Week of Golf and indicating their desire to certainly return again next year.
