Veterans' week success

The 2008 Lachlan Valley Veterans Week of Golf was again a success with 84 players in Cowra starting the week.
A grade winner, Robert Harrison (Port Kembla) 38 points, runner-up Jim Maloy (Forbes) 37 points.
B grade winner, Ken Oates (Cromer) 39 points countback, runner-up John Ellsmore (Cowra) 39 points.
Ladies winner, Patricia Young (Wollongong) 37 points, runner-up Teresa Armitage (Caragabal) 36 points.
Nearest to pins, Jeff Haley, Colin Darley (Nowra), Jill Cripps.
Ninety four players travelled to Condobolin on the Tuesday with A grade winner, Robert Harrison (Port Kembla) 40 points, runner-up Jeff Haley 39 points.
B grade winner, C Dunn 43 points, runner-up George Boyton (Henbury) 39 points.
C grade winner, Don Smith (Parkes) 43 points, runner-up Wally Norman (Parkes) 38 points).
Ladies A grade winner, Barbara Drabsch 40 points, runner-up Barbara Medcalf (Trundle) 37 points.
B grade, Patricia Young (Wollongong) 40 points, runner-up D Staines 38 points.
Wednesday was a lay day for the visitors with an optional four-ball programmed for anyone who wanted to play with Lorna Dowley and Pauline Winch 52 points taking home the trophy from runners-up Barbara Drabsch and Marg Bailey 51 points.
The main day of the tournament was Thursday at Forbes where 112 starters played for the NSW Veterans’ Trophy which were six engraved leather bags.
Ladies, A grade, Colleen Venables 40 points. B grade, Patricia Young (Wollongong) 40 points.
Men’s, A grade, Geoff Coles 42 points. Runner-up Jim Maloy 41 points countback.
B grade, Ken Oates (Cromer) 39 points. Runner-up Kevin Hall (Highlands) 37 points countback.
Day trophies –
Ladies, first, Robyn Hammond 40 points. Second, Barbara Prosser (Kiama) 40 points. Third, Elly Burgers (Bayview) 39 points.
Men’s A grade, George Boyton (Henbury) 41 points. Second, Milton Cartwright 40 points. Third Peter O’Loughlin (Wantima) 39 points.
B grade, Doug Collits 37 points countback. Second, Bruce Squires 37 points countback. Third Robert Acret 37 points.
Highlight of the day was a hole-in-one by John McCumstie (Tamworth) on the third hole.
On Thursday evening 60 golfers were entertained at a barbecue and presentations by John Rennick.
Attending the evening were Ron Simmons and Col Darley, Councillors to NSW Veterans’ Golf Association, who spoke on the drought and its affects and presented the NSW Veterans Trophies.
The final day was played at Parkes on Friday with 105 starters.
A grade winner, Richard Hamilton (Parkes) 38 points countback. Runner-up John McCumstie (Tamworth) 38 points countback. Third place, Ted Hopben (Concord) 38 points.
B grade winner, Peter Sydney (Woolooware) 39 points. Second, Dick Bell (Cowra) 38 points countback. Third, Rick Glover (Parkes) 38 points.
Ladies winner, Barbara Prosser (Kiama) 38 points. Second, Anita Medcalf (Parkes) 37 points. Third, Patricia Young (Wollongong) 36 points.
The comment from visitors was that they would like to see a different format to the week next year.
Their suggestions will be taken to the annual general meeting in August for discussion.
The tournament director would like to thank the players, the helpers, the committee and especially NSW Veterans for the donation of the leather bags which all contributed to a smooth running tournament.
