MAITLAND VETERANS WEEK OF GOLF

MONDAY 2^ND JUNE  2008 TO FRIDAY 6^TH JUNE 2008

It is with great pleasure that I report on the inaugural Maitland Veterans Week of Golf, although some have dubbed it the Maitland Veterans ‘Week of Rain’.

The Club was prepared for a successful entry to the prestigious ‘Week of Golf’ format with a modest yet promising field of over 80 players.  A number of Clubs were represented with players travelling from all over NSW.  The tournament was the first of its kind for Maitland and it was hoped that it would be the first of many.

The event began with a welcoming BBQ which introduced players to the Clubs facilities and gave a sneak peak of the Course.  Unfortunately it was about that same time that the heavens opened with some light rain, which was unfortunately a taste of things to come.

The Monday Stableford was played in good conditions with some fantastic scores registered.  Local knowledge proved key with the Mens event taken out by Bart Helmers with a score of 41 points and the ladies being won by Margaret Whyte with a score of 36 points.  Second place for men was won by Keith Lewis of Bexley with a score of 39 points on a count back and Les Groves of North Ryde taking third with a score of 39.  Tricia Coop of Springwood took out second place for the ladies with a score of 35 points.

Some very brave souls teed off Tuesday morning in what would become horrendous conditions.  Rain fell as heavy as had been seen since the June 2007 flooding and within no time the greens were unplayable.  The difficult decision was made to cancel the days play and some very wet players took refuge in the Clubhouse.

Rain continued to fall and it seemed inevitable that the hard work put into place to organise the event may be wasted.  We held our breath on Wednesday, but come the afternoon the decision was made to cancel the remainder of the weeks events.

The Presentation dinner or commiseration dinner as it was referred to by some, was held on Thursday the 5^th of June and a great night was had by all.  Many visiting players commented that they had been given a trial run at Maitland and very much enjoyed what little golf they had been able to play.  The NSW Veterans Golf Assoc. was represented by Councillor John Wickett who passionately called on those present to keep their diary free for Maitland’s Tournament in 2009.

I personally would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the players that took part in the event and would especially thank the members of our Events Committee comprising of Tournament Directors Doug Wyborn and Perc Nash, and committee members Lyn Helmers, Keith Corcoran and Rick Marsh.

We know that 2009 event will be bigger and better and hope that we can finally showcase what we believe to be one of the best towns (and obviously one of the best Courses !!) in NSW.
