Overcast weather fails to deter golfers
The Narromine Veterans Golf Club conducted their Annual Open Golf Tournament on Thursday June 12. Despite the overcast and threatening weather some 69 players attended and played in the event with eight Western District Clubs represented including one player from Lightning Ridge.
The competition was for ladies and men, with 11 ladies and 58 men competing. This was the fifth annual tournament conducted by the club and was voted highly successful by all who attended.
Major winner for the day was Ted Alder from Dubbo who took the Meyer Trophy for best overall handicap score on the day, with a great round of 43 stableford points. Runner-up was Bruce Bennett of Dubbo on 42 points who took the Central West Pro Shop prize. Best Scratch score of the day was John Martin of Warren with 27 scratch points.
In the ladies event Marie Townsend of Gilgandra was the handicap winner on 37 points, while Narromine’s Betty Berryman won the ladies scratch, with 20 points.
The Vets Club is extremely appreciative of the Narromine Golf Club, for allowing them to use the course for this important event. The Vets Club President thanked all associated with the event for their help and attendance.
Mr Burgess especially thanked the Narromine ladies headed by Marge Kelly for their excellent catering. He also thanked Geoff Swane, Jim Neave and the helpers for their preparation of the course. It was in great shape. Event sponsors were Frank Cross Tyres and the club appreciated their support.
During the presentation ceremony, the club secretary thanked Dale Harding, Heather Bootle and Joan Collins for their help with the starting, card checking and recording the scores on the board.
Coming veteran events are: June 26 WD Individual Championships at Warren, July 24 Tottenham Vets Open and August 2 and 3 NSW Veterans Sand Green Championships at Trangie.

A grade men’s winner Chris Harding (Narromine) 41, second Mal Richardson 40, third Peter Kierath 39 and fourth Bob Foran Gilgandra 38 points. Nearest the pins were N Bennett and H Coggin.
B grade winner was Colin Yates (Dubbo) on a count back from Tony Barlow on 38 points, while third place was Frank Murphy (Dubbo) on a count back from Peter Bryant (Wellington) on 36 points. Nearest the pins were P Perry and D Norris.
A Grade ladies winner was Marie Townsend (Gilgandra) on 37 points, second Mary Bryant (Wellington) 36, third Shirley Ferrier (Warren) 35 and fourth Sue Burke (Warren) on 34 points. Nearest the pins were Betty Berryman and Joyce Jones.
