Coady left speechless.
The good news is the 2009 WOG program has been approved, and
is available for download.
The compilation of this program has certainly had it's ups and downs for some time now
but 'good old Trevor' has prevailed. He has been bashed up a few times during the past
twelve months, John Wickett took him to task and I had a bit of a go while representing a cause down the Murray River-Howlong area, but, common sense and a dogged
determination by Trevor to 'do the right thing' for ALL travelling 'veteran golfers' has won.
So what happened to Des Coady, he had a bad dose of laryngitis, so I kept the questions flying, Vice President Les Mann was
not impressed with my tactics but I had Des on the run and he was finding it hard to keep the responses coming. This was my
opportunity (at least for one meeting) to completely nullify el presidente, he was mortified and I got a pitcure to prove it. This was
going to be a meeting for a bit of fun and games so I thought, but alas the shrewd old headmaster called on his first lieutennant
Dick Farrant to read all his mail and I reckon he had a couple of prepared statements among that lot as well.
While the wolf's away the sheep couldn't play.
Entry forms will be standardised to gather essential information with all entries in an effort to discourage those of us who
try to defeat our rules that are there to give everyone an equal opportunity to participate with fair play in mind. The idea is to
give those who access the website the opportunity to enter events where no entry forms are not available to everyone. I also
understand there will be issues with this approach, they will be considered within the next few weeks, before any final
decision is made on the format of the form.
Our Treasurer Alan Neems has been very proactive regarding the distribution of vouchers as trophies and has prepared
an excellent presentation package that will ensure they are used as intended when distributed.
2010 AVGU Championships
Committee Meeting 13th June 2008
at Port Macquarie
Representatives from all three clubs together with a lady from each of these clubs, John Wickett and I were in attendance and there was an apology from the council representative.
A financial report, bank account statement showing a credit balance of $8280.79, income and expenditure statement for the eleven months to 19th May and a budget based on varying numbers of entrants were circulated.
Correspondence relating to sponsorship invitations and their replies were received and discussed. Requests to Thrifty, Budget and Bunnings were either declined or on unacceptable terms. On Course Golf was able to offer deals through the clubs pro shops. Momentum the major sponsor has already paid the first installment with the balance due to be paid by December. Further deals by negotiation with selected CravanParks and Motels are to be pursued.
The logo for the tournament has been approved by Momentum with only the colours to be determined. It was decided to issue all players with a tournament shirt to be in NSW blue so the logo colours will have to bear this in mind with the logo colour selection.
It was confirmed there would be representatives at both the Adelaide and Cairns tournaments. A brief progress report would be available should the AGM meeting in Adelaide deem it receivable.
A time table of matters necessary for attention for the efficient running of the tournament together with the persons responsible was available.
Availability of sufficient mobile carts was discussed as insufficient numbers would be available at each club. Yamaha, Club or other makers are to be contacted with a view to rental should there be any shortfall.
Under current AVGU guidelines automatic entry for current and past committee persons together with all single figure handicap is guaranteed. The budget presented is based on five, six and seven hundred players. My impression is the clubs representatives feel that bigger will be better. Bearing in mind past tournaments where this has led to five and a half hour rounds, overcrowding at venues where socializing was impossible and presentation night posed various problems. I am inclined to think numbers should be discussed at the Adelaide tournament with their repreentatives.
The guidelines also make recommendations as to trophy allocation. With the change to handicaps to 36.4 there could be changes from three to four grades as well as a better recognition for scratch scores in each grade.
Adelaide with only 192 men and 52 ladies will not have a numbers problem.
Another matter for decision is the basis of distribution in the ball comp as one ball being played for within each four has been thought to be unfair.
All clubs appear to be working well together.
The inclusion of ladies representatives with responsibilities in dedicated areas such as menu selection, ladies draw and scoring, items for inclusion in the gift bag and registration.
A further meeting with the ladies representatives was scheduled.

TOURNAMENT REPORT
MAITLAND 'WEEK OF GOLF'
JUNE 2 - 6, 2008
This tournament promised so much but abominable weather dashed all hopes when incessant rain continued for three days. Competitors were welcomed by an enthusiastic committee at a barbecue from 4 pm to 6 pm on Sunday at the East Maitland Golf Club. Play commenced on Monday in overcast conditions with rain threatening. However the weather improved as the day progressed and a field of one hundred and twenty players returned cards. Some good stableford scores in the low forties and high thirties were registered ..
Showers greeted players on Tuesday and by the time early players reached the ninth hole, the heavens opened. Incessant rain continued for the rest of the day. Greens became un playable and the Committee had no alternative than to cancel the day's play. They decided to combine Monday's 18 holes with Thursday's play, and these two rounds would constitute the 36 hole tournament. Wednesday, the rest day, saw continuous rain in the HunterDistrict and by Thursday auxiliary roads were under water and the golf course was awash.
I was in constant contact with the Tournament Director, Doug Wyborn and he informed me at
6 pm on Wednesday that the committee decided to cancel the whole tournament. I endorsed this decision and advised the committee to place the inaugural NSWVGA Shield in their trophy case and hold the six NSWVGA travelling bags in security until the Year 2009 tournament. The committee decided that there would be no official Presentation Dinner, but they would hold an informal club dinner for any of the caravanning golfers who decided to remain until Thursday before returning home. This was a fine gesture by the tournament committee who also decided to return a portion of the entry fees to all players.
In spite of the disappointment of tournament cancellation, one had to be impressed by the professionalism of the committee in the way they handled a difficult situation. They had the full support of East Maitland Sports and Leisure Club who manage a very modern clubhouse as well as a wonderful course layout. Maitland veterans extended magnificent hospitality to all visitors and this assisted in combatting the doom and gloom of the weather. As time passes and word spreads one can look forward with optimism to this tournament gaining appropriate recognition in the NSW Veteran Golfing Programme.
Finally I would like to convey my personal thanks to the following committee personnel - Doug Wyborn, Keith Corcoran, Perc Nash, Lyn Helmers (Tournament Directors), Rick Marsh (Club Captain) and the General Manager of the Easts Leisure and Golf Club, Scott Driffield.
