The ninth annual veterans tournament conducted by the Mudgee District Veteran Golfers Association was held at the picturesque Mudgee golf club in the week commencing September 15th. 230 players, comprising 137 men and 93 women, up a total of fifteen from last year, representing 78 clubs enjoyed a great week conducted in arguably the best weather ever experienced for this tournament. Given the great rain from the week before, the course was in great nick and gradually got greener and greener as the week progressed. The best represented clubs this year were Kiama with 21 and Cronulla with 20 players. The scores reflected the conditions and were better than any previous year.
Tournament Director Ewan Burgman and Veterans President Tom Cooke ensured a successful week for everyone by planning the event very thoroughly. They were capably assisted by the “girls”, led by Marcia Box, who were again at their efficient best checking cards, writing up result sheets and keeping all scoreboards up to date. Starters, spotters and marshals ensured that the large field flowed smoothly with four and half hours proving to be the longest round. Mudgee now is on golf link and all scores have been forwarded to clubs.
The three rounds of the 54 holes stableford were played on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, with the fourball on Friday. The five NSWVGA trophy vouchers were up for grabs on Thursday. The Presentation Dinner on Thursday evening at Mudgee Golf Club was attended by 280 people with the host club represented by Club President Trevor Crosby, General Manager Phillip Small, the club professional and the course superintendent. The two course meal was well received and Tom and Marcia handled the presentations very efficiently. Jim Cavanagh topped off a fine week by acting again as the DJ that evening, after working on the barbecue all week. His BBQ area adjacent to the tenth green is now titled “Cav on 10”.
This event once again reflected a great team effort characterised by strong harmony amongst all the workers. Well done to all!

*For Michael Jackman, of Kiama, the highlight of his week occurred on Thursday when he scored a hole in one at the 4th hole at Mudgee. He received a $300 voucher, donated by Mudgee RSL, as well as a special trophy from the golf club. And he complained all week of a bad back!
