The annual Griffith Veterans Golf Tournament concluded last Friday with 246 entries plus non golfing visitors in Griffith for the week. NSWVGA Vice-President, Les Mann represented the state executive by playing in the Tournament and presenting the major NSWVGA awards at last Friday night’s Tournament Dinner.Also heading west for the first time was State Treasurer, Alan Neems.Both gentlemen plan to return to play again in 2009. Players came from as far north as the Gold Coast and Tweed Heads, Melbourne and, country Victoria. The NSW visitors came from Sydney, Mid North Coast and the SouthCoast.In all 39 clubs were represented in the Tournament.
This year’s tournament averaged 232 rounds per day and culminated in 200 people attending the presentation dinner at the Griffith Leagues club on Friday night.Many already plan to return in 2009 for the golf and hospitality provided by the Griffith community and tourist attractions.At the end of the week over 100 written expressions of interest to play in 2009 were left with the Tournament Committee.
The major tournament sponsors were Griffith Leagues Club and Griffith Golf Club.The generous support of the Griffith business community allowed the committee to once again stage a quality tournament.
The Committee had to make some changes to allow for daylight saving for the first time and also trialled a new format for the presentation a dinner.This included a continuous power point summary of the Tournament in photos and sponsor acknowledgements.An updated Dinner Newsletter was printed an hour before the dinner, allowing everyone to take home a copy of the results.
The NSWVGA Shield event played on Tuesday was won by George Vlatko from Leeton playing off a handicap of 7.George also won the 54 A Grade event with a three round total of 114 points.The Player of the Tournament was Griffith’s Tony Salvestrin playing off a 18 handicap and recording a three round total of 119 Stableford points.

The Area News Club Challenge event was won by the defending Griffith team of Eric Couper, Joe Cudmore, Ken Alpen and Allan Foster with a score of 434 points from South West Rocks Golf Club on 415.
