COBRAM-BAROOGA INAUGURAL WEEK OF GOLF

28th September to 3rd October 2008

ATTENDANCE:   42 Visitors 20 Cobram Barooga Members total 64 players

REGISTRATION:  Held at Club House, well attended. Name Badges were issued and Monday & Tuesday time sheets made available. Two/Three Committee persons were in attendance and made everyone very welcome. Proof of Veteran membership was not sought.

COURSES:  Cobram Barooga is fortunate to have two 18 hole courses, the old course and the newer west course. Both were in good condition with big greens and tees. They are short of water and under the circumstances the courses were a credit to the greens staff.

PRESENTATION DINNER:  Excellent 3 course dinner in the Club House and attended by the Club President Lionel Bryne, and General Manager Brian Sinnett who also acted as MC, the Club Captain Ray Wallace was also in attendance.

President Lionel Byrne confirmed that they would be much more active in promoting player numbers in 2009; he felt the Adelaide Championships and Broken Hill week may have taken some potential players away this year. There was initial confusion about player eligibility, as the event was named ‘NSW Veteran Tournament” and some Victorian players were told they were not eligible. Cobram Barooga hosts a Seniors Tournament and numbers for that now exceed 200 players, they are confident that they can grow this Veteran Week of Golf.

NSW VGA DAY:

Graeme Webb      Cobram Barooga Golf Club       39 points count back

Trevor Durand     Redland Bay Queensland           39 points

                            Ladies

                            Zel Turrell                  Dubbo                                          36 points

Gay Henderson          Cobram Barooga                          35 points count back

OTHER TROPHIES:  Golf Professional Justin Speirani held daily presentations (I confirmed this was OK, but we may have had to recover and re allocated due to 54 hole event), which allowed the dinner to have the major prizes only including the NSWVGA vouchers. The 54 hole overall winners and runners up were presented with excellent framed photographs of the golf course and the Murray River.

SUMMARY:   Justin Speirani rescheduled tee times for Tuesday and onwards as there were initially some large time gaps between husbands and wives. I will communicate directly with President Lionel Bryne re shortcomings on the 2008 entry form and will liaise to try and preview the 2009 entry form before publication. Players generally felt this good first effort from Cobram Barooga and most have indicated their planned return. A feature of the 2008 week was the seeding of players on Thursday (this was advised on the entry form) for the final day of the 54 hole event.
