Veteran Golfers from 32 clubs throughout NSW, Queensland and Victoria took part in the 2008 event conducted at Bathurst and Oberon in the Central West of NSW. The weather was great all week with some unusual heavy early fog on Tuesday at Oberon, this was enough to delay the start for some 37 minutes and the anxious 'vets' had to partake of coffee and biscuits provided by the host golf club.
The Oberon Ladies did their usual wonderful job in providing lunch as was the hospitality extended to the visitors by Dick O'Donnell and his hard working assistants. The event welcomed a couple of Queenslanders and a great bunch from Victoria who were making their first foray into NSW 'veteran' golfing territory, there very welcome and have thoroughly enjoyed their visit. to the west.
Bathurst Golf Club hosted a 4BBB event on day one and the course was in excellent condition, although one or two 'vets' who didn't putt well on the day blamed the recently cored greens (a necessary evil worldwide), however, I didn't hear the same complaint on Friday when the original perpetrators finished very well - greens completely recovered three days later.
Oberon course was it's usual challenging self with greens in excellent condition and receptive to the wildly spinning balls from all the sharpshooters. More 'vets' had trouble there to as putts continually lipped out, no need to worry people because is caught all the locals as well and it was wonderful to see the local support to ensure the survival of this event next year.
Barry Pyne (Portland - 12) took out the major NSWVGA Trophy event with a three day aggregate score of 117 with Dennis O'Connell (Oberon - 13) not far away in runner-up spot on 115 and the tournament trekking Peter McGarry was thrid on 113.
Ladies NSWVGA Aggregate Trophy winner was Bev Bellman (Marysville) on 118pts with Lyn Noble (Eastwood) on 105 pts.
New Treasurer Alan Neems made the presentations on behalf of the webmaster so he could take the photographs. Bev and Bill Poole (Vice-President NSWVGA) were once again in attendance and the executive body were well represented, with several spine tingling meetings taking place during the event - mostly over a few beers.
