ANTILL Park’s Margaret Shay and Denice Dickson from the Everglades Club on the central coast are regulars on the NSW Veterans Golf circuit.
They are tackling Orange’s three courses this week as part of the 11th annual City of Orange Veterans Golf Classic which is one of many events they will play at this year.
Shay has been playing at the Orange classic for the life of the event and enjoys playing regularly on the circuit as it is a great chance to share the enjoyment of golf with people from other clubs.
The Campbelltown resident travels around the state with her husband with a trip to Orange always on the calender along with around 20 other events.
“You travel a lot,” Shay said. “We always come here, we always go to Griffith. We go all over the place.”
She wasn’t hitting them too well yesterday at Wentworth but wasn’t that worried about high scores with winning the tournaments not a major priority for most players.
Dickson, from Umina on the central coast, is another player like Shay who frequents the many veterans events around the state.
She is a fan of Orange as a destination and rates the Wentworth and Duntryleague courses aside some of Sydney’s top golf clubs.
“This one and Duntryleague, they’re up there with Sydney courses,” Dickson said.
Charlestown’s Lance Berry is one who is taking a liking to Orange’s courses after shooting 74 off the stick yesterday at Ex-Services to top men’s A grade. Colin Hargreaves led the B grade field with a round of 77 while Barry Simpson recorded 82 to take out C grade.
Kirsten Burke from Vicentia Golf Club headed the ladies A grade field notching 76 stableford points over the first two days of the classic.
Juanita Bamford leads B grade with 78 while Gail Aspen and Carmen Fitzgerald tied for the lead in C grade with 71.

Orange’s three courses will be relatively quiet today with the classic enjoying a rest day with play to resume tomorrow with the final round of the men’s 54-hole stroke tournament culminating at Wentworth.
The women’s 54-hole stroke event will also conclude tomorrow at Duntryleague while four-ball best ball competitions will take place on Friday.
