2008 NSWVGA STROKEPLAY CHAMPIONSHIPS
119 players from 54 clubs competed in the 36 holes state championships at Bankstown Golf Club on Monday March 17th and Tuesday March 18th in splendid weather, on an immaculately presented course. While there were many Sydney based players, visiting players came from as far away as Ballina, Tamworth, Tenterfield, ACT, Mollymook and Gordonvale in Queensland.
I must thank Bob Coulson, Les Mann, Rex Tate, Richard Doyle, Bill Poole and Vie Nunn
for their assistance during the tournament.
It would have been nice to have had another twenty or so entries. The only clash I could
discover was with some rounds of the super pennants series in Sydney, and I believe the
WA seniors championships may have been on at the same time.
Bankstown was down about eight competitors on last year, mostly from the 75+ group.
The small number (11) in the 55-59 group is a concern but I think that I should consider
the same age divisions next year.
The course was in better condition than last year, following good rains, and certainly was
a great test of golf with play from near, or on, the plates both days.
I am going to contact Les Browne from the NSWGA and seek increased status to the
event by applying for a points system award that is used in Senior events throughout
NSW to try to attract more lower markers, like Rick Oliver, Peter Richardson etc.
Overall I was pleased with the running of the event and the positive feedback I received.
