TOURNAMENT REPORT - CENTRAL WEST- ORANGE
With sound organisation, tremendous hospitality and perfect weather, the Central West Orange Classic of Year 2008 was a wonderful event Further proof of this fact was attendance of four hundred and twenty participants from NSW, Queensland and Victoria,
Registration at Wentworth Golf Club on Sunday provided a great start to the event. The procedure occupied three hours with handicap checking, display of the week's draw and social interaction accompanied by a surplus of nibblies and wine tasting. David Gunner (Tournament Organiser), Peter Coleman (Tournament Captain) had made a great start to the week with the full cooperation of an industrious male and female committee.
Weatherwise, a superb Central Western day greeted players at Duntryleague (men) and Ex-Services (women). Duntryleague was in excellent condition with fairways well covered and greens fast and true. On the second day the men moved to the Ex-Services club atBloomfield where greens were difficult to read because of grain and excess cover. There have been some wonderful improvements to course layout but surrounds to the fairways suffered due to lack of water. The final round in the men's 54 hole event was played at Wentworth which is a long and demanding course with some great golf holes. Wentworth was in excellent condition and fully tested even the lowest markers.
The Open 54 hole scratch event was won by David Burns of Calliope (Qld) with a score 0/228 (73,80,75), from lan Fillery (Broken Hill) with 231 (79,74,78). Both players praised the courses and their presentation. George Barnes (Kogarah) won the open 54 hole nett title with a score 0/203. The 54 hole scratch winners in each grade were:-A Grade - PhilJeffrey (Belmont) B Grade - BruceTapp (Kiama) C Grade - John Shay (Macarthur)
The women's 54 hole open stable ford was won by Val Pollock (Duntryleague) 118 points from Sue Wilson-Brown (Bellingen) 117 points.
The Presentation Dinner at the Ex-Services Club was attended by five hundred and thirty golfers who enjoyed a great night of camaraderie and dancing. The NSWVGA President, Des Goody took the opportunity of presenting Harold Percival, tournament director for the previous ten years, with the NSWVGA Meritorious Service Badge. The President spoke in glowing terms of Harold's tremendous contribution to the advancement of veteran golf in the Central Western Divisional Group.
The tournament was well summed up in the words of NSWVGA Vice President, Les Mann, "This one is up at the top of the list".
