Norfolk Island 2022 Veteran’s Week of Golf

Posted on: 28 February

Norfolk Island Veterans Golf Tournament
This event began in 1991 and has enjoyed many successful years ever since. It is one of the most popular three day events on the Norfolk Island calendar. It is held in February each year and is open to any golfer 50 years or older. Unlike NSWVGA weeks of golf where grades are decided by handicap, Norfolk Island separates grades by age, the divisions being 50 – 59 years, 60 – 69 years and 70 years and older, an unusual concept but the golfers, most of the 110 players, visitors, seemed to be attending to enjoy the hospitality of the locals and the peace and serenity of this lovely island.
The course is nine holes with different tees for each nine when playing 18 holes. It is not long 5800m, but when the wind blows, which it did most of the week, it plays much longer than the card length. It also has two of the hardest short holes often encountered. The 4th/13th, 126m/142m, is cut into a hillside covered in long thick grass, plays into the prevailing wind, across OOB and a beach on the right with a steep slope falling away to the left. (see photo) It is ranked No 1 on the stableford index. Quite a challenge where 4 is a good score.

As Norfolk Island doesn’t seem to have a close affiliation to any mainland state, NSWVGA Executive Council agreed that it should offer two mini shields as mementos to the 54 hole nett winners, men and women, regardless of state of membership. The offer was gratefully accepted by the tournament committee and the shields were presented at Fridays presentation. Men’s winner was Arthur Keeping from Norfolk Island. The women’s winner was Deb West, a Bargara member, who with other Bargara members regularly support NSWVGA Weeks of Golf.
If you are seeking some close overseas adventure with golf included, the nomination form for 2023 is on the Norfolk Island Golf Club website/face book site. Weekly packages including accommodation, car hire and airfares are reasonably priced. For more information contact Norfolk Island Travel Centre. You won’t be disappointed.
