Mudgee Week of Golf

Posted on: 17 November

Mudgee Veterans 21st Week of Golf was held on 2 to 6 November having been rescheduled from 7 to 11 September because of the Coronavirus pandemic. This rescheduling became necessary through Government restrictions introduced in mid-August but we, and over 140 golfers, are very happy that we persevered with the event.

The event operated under Covid restrictions and all players did their part in keeping everyone safe by observing the necessary protocols and distancing requirements – a big thank you to them.

The Mudgee course was in absolutely fantastic condition and it is difficult to believe that we were still in a long term drought in February. Every golfer commented on the gorgeous condition of the course and many good scores were recorded. Early players on Thursday had the rain but the rest of the days were perfect for golf.

It was not possible to hold the usual Presentation Dinner and a small presentation was made to the major winners late on Friday afternoon – the daily winners were awarded their prizes during the week. As there is always a strong interest in the results, a listing of all winners (daily and other) has been emailed to all players in the tournament.

In the 54 event, the A Grade winner was Rad Vasic (Port Kembla) with 110 points and Rad also won the Col Matthews Trophy (on a countback) for his very consistent golf. Ross Jones (Waratah) and Keith Baker (Mudgee) filled the minor placings.

Joe Crook (Toronto) won the B Grade also with 110 points from Ron Boundy (Shelly Beach) and Justin O’Brien (Merewether). C Grade winner was Bob Colley (Mudgee) with 105 points from Graham Seater (Cabramatta) and Jeff Draper (Jamberoo).

In the Ladies Division, A Grade was won by Wendy Thompson (Emerald Downs) with 101 points from Trish Jones (Mudgee) and Cathy Byrne (Everglades). Lady B Grade winner was Lyn Brownlee (Shelly Beach) with 100 points from Carolyn Isaacs (Wakehurst) and Marilyn Baker (Ryde-Parramatta).

The much sought after NSWVGA Shields for the best Thursday rounds were taken out by Graham Seater (Cabramatta) and Marilyn Baker (Ryde-Parramatta) with Rad Vasic (Port Kembla) and Wendy Thompson (Emerald Downs) following close behind.

Friday’s 4 Ball was played in beautiful weather and was very competitive with Peter and Robyn Ray (Shelly Beach) winning on 47 points from fellow club players, Des and Lyn Brownlee on 46 points; a pick up pairing of Warren Mitchell (Goulburn) and Alex Nicholson (Mudgee) took 3rd place with 45 points. The 4 Ball was the icing on the cake of a most enjoyable week for many old and new friends of the event.

We hope there is some normality (whatever that may be) next year when the Mudgee tournament is scheduled for 13 to 17 September 2021.
