Griffith Vets 2022 Grassroots Event

The Griffith Veteran Golfers’ Association (GVGA) played their NSW VGA Grassroots event in perfect conditions on the Griffith Golf Course on 15th December.

The event had special significance as it was only seven weeks ago that unprecedented weather conditions caused the unfortunate cancellation of the Griffith Week of Golf Tournament. With around 160 players from across NSW and inter-state in Griffith for the event, most attended a fantastic registration function on the Sunday afternoon and were keen to play in the Tournament over the next five days.

That night, a storm front rolled in and dumped around 75 mm of rain on the course and surrounding areas and a further 30 mm over the next two days. The flooding that resulted (see pictures below) meant the golf course and the adjacent Griffith Airport had to be closed and by the Wednesday, with no chance of getting back on the course, the Tournament had to be cancelled.

With the cancellation behind us, 51 Griffith Vets played in the Grassroots event, which was a medley single stableford combined with an aggregate stableford for teams of four. To make the event even more enjoyable, it was our annual Christmas celebration with drinks and a light meal following the golf.

President Rob Trembath acknowledged the support of the NSW Veteran Golfers’ Association through its Grassroots program when he presented the prizes to the winners of the three grades. As well as the NSW VGA vouchers going to the winners, they received the normal share of the competition prize pool with nearest the pin winners receiving a bottle of the famous McWilliams Hanwood Port. The winners of the Teams event each received a pair of whiskey glasses.
