Port Stephens Week of Golf 2025.

Port Stephens Week of Golf attracted a capacity field of 136 players comprising 63 ladies and 73 men. The week started with a Welcome Function at Tanilba Bay Golf Club on the Sunday afternoon (26th Oct) where well over 100 players gathered to register, receive their times for the week and enjoy a light meal and drink.

This year we had 4 players making the journey from Victoria as well as 13 players from Queensland, 2 from the ACT, 2 ladies from New Zealand and for the first time 3 players from Western Australia as well as players from all over NSW coming to our event.

DAY 1. Monday 27th Oct at Pacific Dunes was the first round of the week, the course was in excellent condition after months of wet weather. In the ladies section Jennifer Dignam from Emerald Downs led the ladies side with a fine 43pts closely followed by Judy Tiedeman from Toronto GC with 42pts and no less than 8 ladies recording scores of 40pts or over.

On the Men’s side it was a much different story with only 6 men recording scores over 33pts, the best being Chris Chang from North Ryde GC leading the way with 39pts followed by Bill Andrew from Gosford GC on 38pts and Harold Yates on 37pts.

DAY 2. Horizons Resort proved to be a much more difficult day even though the course was in impeccable condition, the weather turned from a warm spring day at Pacific Dunes to a very cool and windy day at Horizons and the scores reflected that with only 5 ladies recording scores of 34pts or over with the days best being from Dianne Moncrieff from Noosa GC with an outstanding 42pts with the next best being Julia Chang from North Ryde with 37pts. The men fared much better than the ladies at Horizons with at least one 40+ in each division with the best round coming from local Horizons member Paul Purcell with 42pts followed by Wayne Finkelde from Forster- Tuncurry in Division 1 with 41pts.

We also had our only rain for the week late in the day catching the last few groups on the final couple of holes.

Wednesday being our mid week rest day and it rained off and on during the day only for day 3 at Nelson Bay to be perfect weather for golf once again.

DAY 3. Nelson Bay GC saw a marked improvement in the scoring once again with Judy Tiedeman from Toronto GC recording a fine 43pts in Division 3 followed by Heather McCartney from Horizons Resort and Jayne Berriman from Tanilba Bay both scoring 41pts while in Division 1 Karol Hwang from North Ryde GC and clubmate Clare Kim recorded 41pts and 40pts respectively in their division.

On the Mens side we saw good scores again across the board, in Division 1 Wie Jung from Asquith GC return an excellent

40pts followed by Andrew Cowley from Strathfield GC with 39pts, while in Division 2 Robin Kim from North Ryde GC recorded 43pts to take out Division 2 from Alan Flaherty from Charlestown GC and Danny Lloyd from Kew GC on 41pts each. In Division 3 we witnessed the best round of the tournament when one of our long time regular players, Bryan Mullan from Muirfield GC returned an incredible 46pts to easily win his division.

At the end of the competition at Nelson Bay on day 3 it was then time to relax and enjoy each others company at the Presentation Dinner at Nelson Bay GC where 129 of our players and officials enjoyed an excellent meal supplied by the catering staff and some lively music for anyone wanting to hit the dance floor.

During the Presentation we presented a host of winners, the main ones being the ladies and men’s NSWVGA Shield Winners and Runner’s up, these were presented by our very popular NSWVGA Representative Aileen Williams, the ladies Runner Up being Dianne Moncrieff from Noosa GC with a score of 72pts and the Men’s Runner Up was Wayne Finkelde from Forster-Tuncurry GC with a score of 70pts.

Next Aileen presented the Annual NSWVGA Shield’s to the Ladies and Mens Winners. (These Shields are for the best 2 rounds from Pacific Dunes & Horizons Resort) The Ladies Winner this year was Helen Broadbent from Gosford GC with a score of 73pts and the Mens Winner this year was Paul Purcell from Horizons Resort with a score of 72pts.

It was then time to present the awards for the 54 hole event and these were presented by Port Stephens Vets President Col Kerrison.

The Ladies 54 hole Runner Up was Karol Hwang from North Ryde GC with a score of 108pts and the Mens 54 hole Runner Up was Chris Chang from North Ryde with a score of 112pts.

The major awards on the night being for Ladies and Mens 54 hole event and the Ladies Winner was Clare Kim from North Ryde GC with a score of 109pts and the Mens Winner was Bill Andrew from Gosford GC with a score of 113pts.

At the conclusion of the Presentation Tournament Director Gary Watt thanked Port Stephens Council for their ongoing financial support of their tournament and the four local golf clubs for their assistance and donation of raffle prizes during the week as well as thanking all players for their continued support of our tournament and supporting the local area of Port Stephens.

DAY 4. Some 80 players teed off on the Friday (31st Oct.) at Tanilba Bay GC to play a single stableford for ladies and men, with a 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize for both Ladies and Men as well as NTP & D&C as usual.
