A very successful Tamworth/Longyard Veterans Week of Golf was held from March 16th to March 20th.
The hot, dry and windy weather of the previous 6 weeks severely impacted the condition of both the Tamworth and Longyard courses, however the greenkeepers form both courses are to be complemented on the course presentations given the trying conditions they had to work with. Scores for each day’s events probably reflected the amount of run on the courses. The greens though, presented a different challenge with many players finding it difficult adjusting to the slowness of them.
Overall playing numbers were up on the 2025 event by almost 30%, with the floods in Qld and the fuel price situation only having a negligible effect on cancellations. There were 213 individual entries for the 4 days after cancellations, consisting of 131 males and 82 females. These numbers allowed for 3 male divisions and 2 female divisions.
There were 24 entries from Qld with the rest coming from NSW clubs. The Tamworth and Longyard clubs had 35 and 28 players respectively playing. A total of 48 different clubs were represented.
The daily fields were Monday 170, Tuesday 168, Thursday 145 and a full field of 136 players for the Friday 4Ball with an 8am shotgun start followed by a light luncheon and Presentation.
NSWVGA President John Daley and his wife were in attendance, as were councillors Jim Shadlow and his wife from Inverell and Peter Guy and his wife from the Ryde/Parramatta Club.
The success of the event was made possible by the support of the staff and members from both the Tamworth Golf Club and the Longyard Golf Club, the major and minor sponsors along with the efforts of the Week of Golf committee. Most of all though the players who participated showing great comradery and enjoying themselves over the 4 days.
