Western Riverina (Griffith) Veteran Golfers Week of Golf Tournament
On Sunday the 24th October 2021 the Western Riverina (Griffith) Veteran Golfers tournament kicked off at 4.30pm with registration which included a BBQ manned by members of Griffith Vet Golfers held at the clubhouse and surrounding grounds.
The registration included a gift bag containing various samples of local produce. The bag was supplied by Elders and included a “My Griffith” booklet supplied by the Griffith City Council. The bag contained a golf ball and pen donated by AKO Irrigation, a bar of freshly made nougat and free coffee voucher from Bertoldos Bakery, a freshly picked Late Lane orange supplied by Rinaland, fruit exporters of Griffith, a ruby orange contributed by Vito Mancini of Red Belly Citrus, locally grown prunes from Angas Park Prunes of South Australia and sourced by Yenda Producers. Also in the bag was olive oil soap donated by the principals of Morella Grove, Frank and Jan Dal Bon and wrapped very nicely by Roy Calabria’s wife and her stitching group. SunRice donated packs of rice-based products and the Real Juice Company supplied a bottle of juice. Select Harvests Food Products generously contributed packs of a variety of nuts and nut products. Drive Through Pharmacy contributed a $6 gift voucher and the Griffith Leagues Club a 20% off meal voucher. To cap it off, Calabria Family Wines, Casella Family Brands and De Bortoli Wines donated small bottles of wine. The Griffith Golf Club gave every competitor a free drink.
Travel restrictions placed on many covid affected locations resulted in a significant reduction in competitors from the original entry list of 222 to a total of 122 players registered from 23 clubs. The reduced field resulted in a change from the usual 2 tee morning and afternoon time sheet to a one tee start commencing at 8am.
The Monday competition had near perfect golf conditions. The course could not have been presented any better although the greens and their pace challenged some competitors. A bonus was the cold watermelon, tea, coffee and freshly made slices/cakes (supplied by the associate members) made available to all as they crossed to the back 9 each day. Trophies for Monday were donated by the Griffith Leagues Club and local Mobil distributer Rod McNabb. Prizes much sought after were the nearest the pins, as these included $25 vouchers at the Leagues Club, $20 Steggles shop vouchers or 3 bottles of locally grown wine. The ball competition cut off was 34 points for each individual competition day. A separate incentive to do well was the Children’s Hospice Bear Cottage Challenge. Local stalwart Gerry Cox challenges every golfer to beat his score each day. The loser buying a ticket in the raffle for the bear.
Tuesday was again a perfect day for golf with a cool start warming to 25 degrees. The day was sponsored by the Griffith Golf Club with Pro Shop vouchers available for all winners and runners up. The ball competition score was reduced to 33 points as not enough made the 34 point cut off.
Thursday warmed up a little to 31 degrees but a late afternoon passing weather front provided some challenging wind and a small sprinkle of rain. The day was sponsored by Yarran Wines with a dozen mixed wines for the winners and a 6pk for the runners up. Thursday had the added advantage of participants playing for the sought after NSWVGA Shields and trophies donated by the New South Wales Vet Golfers Association.
A 4BBB medley was played on the Friday for the trophies donated by Griffith Drive Thru Pharmacy. Play commenced with a shot gun start at 9am and once again everyone seemed to enjoy this relaxed way to end the week. The scoring was tight with the top 5 teams separated by just one point.
The culmination of the week was the presentation lunch held on the lawns adjacent to the club house. Normally we would host a dinner at the Leagues Club on Friday night. Unfortunately, covid restrictions meant the Leagues Club were not able to hold the dinner so short notice plans were enacted to have a caterer step in and prepare a delicious lunch that was enjoyed by all prior to the presentations. A prize pool of more than $7,000 was on offer for significantly less than the expected number of entries which resulted in more than half the competitors receiving a winner or runner up trophy.
Our major sponsors were Griffith Leagues Club and Sunrice Australia. Along with Nutrient AG, Mobil (Rod McNabb), Yarran Wines, Griffith Golf Club, Griffith Drive Thru Pharmacy, Bertoldos Bakery, Casella Family Wines, Calabria Family Wines, Barratto Wines, Min & Co Wines, De Bortoli Wines allowed us to present great trophies. Without these terrific organisations this tournament would not have made the impressive impact that it did on the competitors. To cap it all off the 1.6 metre bear, representing Bear Cottage was won by Robin Salvestro of Griffith. In all a great week and we’re hoping everyone returns in 2022 with their friends. Thanks to all our Sponsors and the hardworking members of Griffith VGA who contributed to such a great week of golf.
