WEATHER GREAT FOR GOLF WEEK
The weather was perfect for all three days of play of the 2022 Mclean Care New England Veterans ‘Week of Golf’ hosted by Inverell Veteran Golfers.
All three days were played under clear skies and with the course in great condition. The players had nothing but praise for the quality of the greens, which are a credit to head green keeper, Ben Watling.
While player numbers were down a little this year because of COVID and floods, 109 hit off on Tuesday. More than a third of the players were 75 years or over.
Men and lady golfers from Hervey Bay and Bargara in Queensland, Wollongong, Tathra, Forbes in New South Wales and Wodonga in Victoria journeyed to Inverell and stayed for
the week to play in the tournament. The organizing committee could not be any happier with the week as it is a big boost to the town’s economy as well as the golf club.
The 36 hole championship was keenly contested over Tuesday and Thursday while players-enjoyed a relaxing 2-ball round on Friday before players and partners attended the Presentation Luncheon in the afternoon.
Tournament Director Jim Shadlow said “we had thirty-two players visiting for the first time and many stated “what a great town. We are blown away by the towns presentation,
friendliness and attractions.” Mr Shadlow praised the response from local business houses to sponsor the event and this helped to make it a tremendous success. The visitors were outspoken in their praise for the tournament and town, and vowed to return when a similar event is staged next.
The New England Veteran’s week of Golf got under way in Inverell on Tuesday under Inverell’s typical, beautiful autumn conditions. A cloudless sky, little to no breeze and temperatures rising to 24 degrees made it ideal for golf. Local player, Steve Kent, had an outstanding day to finish with 42 points, 5 points clear of the next best score in the opening day today. Top scorer for the women was Jenni Holland from Ocean Shores with 36 points. The top score in each of the women’s divisions were – Div 1 – Jenni Holland and Div 2 – Chris Noonan from Aberdeen
The best in the men’s divisions were Div 1 – Steve Kent, Div 2 – Ross Bartlett from Muree and Graham Moore from Inverell, Div 3 – Ross Tutt from Inverell.
Today was the start of two individual daily stablefords which continue Thursday. The two days will also be combined to determine the winner of the NSW veteran’s sponsored 36-hole event. Friday will be a 2-ball best ball, hitting off at 8:30. It will be followed by lunch and presentation.
Local golfer, Steve Kent, took out the men’s division of the New South Wales Veteran Golfers Association Trophy for the New England District. Jenni Holland from Ocean Shores won the women’s section. The trophy was played for over 36 holes on Tuesday and Thursday.
Another local, Kevin Campbell, produced the best score for Thursday while Julie Berg from Sydney was best for the women
The best results on Thursday for each division were.
In men’s
Division 1 – Steve Kent, Graeme Hunt and Larry Finney
Division 2 – Kevin Campbell and Graham Moore
Division 3 – Phillip Lumby, Noel Gray and Ray Clegg
In the women’s
Division 1 – Julie Berg and Lee Daley
Division 2 – Jackie Wheeler and Cathy Harrison
The players took to the course for a 4-ball-best-ball Friday and this was followed by a lunch and presentation.
Ross Bartlett, looking around the clubhouse at all the other elderly players sitting socialising at the end of the day said to me “You realise that this is Gods waiting room”.
