Report on the NSWVGA Championships – Sept 23-29
conducted in Dubbo in conjunction with the Week of Golf.

All entry forms, payments and checks on NSWVGA player memberships were made online prior to registration thus ensuring a streamlined process on “Rego Arvo”.

In the days leading up to the tournament the 170 entrants representing 44 clubs, were informed via email of their Day 1 tee time, conditions of play and other visitor information.

Some late withdrawals cut the total field to 157 with 40 Men participating in the Strokeplay Championships and 35 Ladies the Stableford Championship. Remaining players participated in the WOG schedule.

Registration: Conducted on Sunday with 80 in attendance.
All players received bags of “goodies” including a bar voucher, local coffee shop vouchers for use during the week, information packs, free balls, tees, pitch repairers and protein bars.
Each table in the function room was supplied with a beautifully presented charcuterie platter to nibble on over drinks and conversation.
Vets President Phil Halpin welcomed the visitors whilst he
Vets Captain John Bernasconi outlined the three courses, on the 27-hole layout, to be played during the week along with local rules, ball comp collection and the display of daily score sheets.

Weather: Days 1 & 2 were held in warm, Spring sunshine. Day 3 started with early drizzle but soon fined for a reasonable morning’s play. The afternoon players were not so fortunate with wind and a late storm causing several WOG players to head to the clubhouse early. The Irish 4BBB on Friday was held in cloudy benign conditions.

Courses: Almost without exception the Dubbo Golf course was rated by players one of the top courses played during the year. The low markers in the Strokeplay enthused over the excellent greens and general course setup prepared by the club’s Course Superintendent and his staff.

Communication / Daily Information: Vets Registrar Annette Priest kept players informed each evening via email of any time changes for the following day along with other relevant information, whilst daily scoresheets were posted on the noticeboard. Ball comp winners could collect from the TD table each morning.

Presentation Dinner: After welcoming the visitors on behalf of the club’s board Club Captain John Dixon (wearing his other hat!) handed over to the MC, Secretary Greg Shortis, to conduct the evening. The prize presentation process was efficient and fast-paced with the many prizes handed out to the 80+ players in attendance by state President John Daley, Club Professional Jake O’Brien and Course Superintendent Michael Wherritt.

Glowing reviews were received for the superb smorgasbord-style roast dinner from well-satisfied diners. The caterers then made up free takeaway packs with any left-over food. This was a smash hit with our caravaners. Waste not want not!

Following the formalities the evenings guest speaker, Dubbo Regional Council CEO Murray Wood, gave an extremely informative talk on future initiatives of council and the potential growth of the city because of large national infrastructure projects planned or currently underway.

The Week of Golf concluded on Friday morning with a free breakfast before a full field teed-off for a shotgun start – Irish 4BBB. Presentations were completed over lunch.

Players were extremely complementary of the week’s organisation, communication and courses played with many booking a spot for next year.
